art therapy

what is art therapy?

Art therapy utilises art and verbal communication as modes of self-expression. It aims to reduce distress and improve social, emotional and mental health by promoting insight, self-compassion and a sense of agency and self-worth —

(British Association of Art Therapists)

how does it work?

Art Therapy is suitable for all ages and every stage of life, including those whose lives have been affected by difficult life experiences, systemic inequality and oppression, neurodiversity, illness and/or disability. Art Therapy can support people who find expressing themselves verbally challenging, but also individuals who tend to over-verbalise their thoughts and feelings.

I work with young people, adults and older adults who have a range of difficulties and diagnoses. I have experience in treating a range of psychological and emotional disorders, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, loss and bereavement and relationship problems.

I draw upon psychodynamic theory, which explores both conscious and unconscious processes.

how much does it cost?

£70 per session.

£70 initial consultation.

I offer concessions to those on low incomes and trainee therapists.

Free 20-minute initial consultation on the telephone.

All Appointments last 50 minutes.

Is it a validated therapy?

HCPC (Health Care Professions Council): AS019133

I am a member of the British Association for Art Therapy (BAAT) and the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC), which means I am bound by their code of ethics.

I am registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office and comply with their guidance of data protection and the storage of personal data.

I have regular clinical supervision to improve therapeutic care and to ensure I deliver ethical and high-quality therapy.

what can I expect?

In Art Therapy, a range of art materials are provided, and you would be invited to use them in any way you wish. Being skilled in art or in a craft is not necessary to benefit. Instead, there is a need to be open to the possibilities of the process involved. Like with any therapy, the process can be challenging as uncomfortable feelings and painful memories may emerge.

At the heart of all successful therapies is a strong, reliable and robust relationship. We would be working together to attempt to make sense of the art objects that you have made, likely considering the significance of them in relation to your relationships and the thoughts you have, both currently and perhaps also much earlier on in your life.

IS it right for me?

All sessions are confidential, which extends to any of your artwork produced.

Please get in touch via email so that we can work on establishing a treatment plan that will be specific to your needs. After contacting me, we would agree a date and time for an initial consultation together. This would offer you an opportunity to ‘try out’ art therapy. I would encourage you to utilise this time to explore whether you feel that therapy with me feels appropriate.
